the "incestuous idiots" in the "yellow house" was actually a reference to meem, although i hate to spell it out cos it blows the fun of this piece now that we are analyzing and dissecting it.. this piece is a rant.. an angry rant.. it's what we all want to say when we are tired.. it's not an argument.. it's not even the 'opinion" of one person.. it's one person who's lashing out.. and lashing out is a perfectly acceptable way of expressing oneself.. this is a literary piece not a journalistic piece.. i am a gay activist myself and i've been active for many years (on and off) and it stung me to read it at first, but then i thought: yes, yes, indeed, fuck it all.

it's obviously a way of saying: i'm exhausted, and we haven't done enough. that's the message i get from the piece.: we're tired and we haven't done enough. for some people, it's a motivation to do more.. for others, it's a fashit kholoq.

i am quite sure the columnist or the editors don't mean it literally. otherwise, would they be publishing bekhsoos at all?

You mischaracterize Rita.... anyone should/can have the right to critique anything. Just because it comes from a Meem website doesn't invalidate it. That said, it wasn't really a critique, it was a pot shot, which is unfortunate for those of us who are trying to engage in intelligent critique that goes beyond "you suck".

I will read the comments before leaving another comment on that but on the article itself I have to say:

I agree with lots and lots of points in the article.... but I don't see the point of telling everyone "fuck you", i don't like the way the gay movement is being managed, I don't like "gay friendly" places that much and to say the truth, I don't particularly like gay people in general, are not that different than heterosexual people. I care about gay rights. And yes we tend to get so self-sufficient that we forget that our activism is not really inclusive... what's the point of writing such an aggressive article? I mean when I want to leave a comment I am greeted with the following sentence "LEAVE COMMENT - SPEAK YOUR MIND, BUT BE RESPECTFUL!"
Do you think this article was "respectful"? or does it only apply to those who leave comments not those who write the articles?

"Why have we gotten to a point where we differentiate between a yellow house and a purple house?"

I see no purple house mentioned in the piece ;)

"Why are we scared to listen to our critics? When did things get to the point where we can’t disagree without attacking each other?"

The problem is that it *sounds like* the criticism is coming straight out of the "purple house" because of the place where it is posted. If this was posted on a neutral blog, no one would be upset. It's the CONTEXT.

*sighs at the futility of this debate*

The article is nothing more than what it is: a display of frustration and anger. Anger is a valid emotion in this context (it would be weird to me to discover that activists aren't angry). What it is not is constructive. And that's not a bad thing, it doesn't have to be, this article just isn't. I agree with Raja on the vital importance of constructive criticism, but I don't think the point of this article was to allow for self-reflection and/or self-critique, that is not the type of space that it offers. I saw it as fulfilling a very different function.

Hasan, just because it has the word fuck does not mean it is not constructive.

It points out issues. It doesn't provide solutions, but it does bring up valid points.
