Ah! The joys of reading articles in western newspapers, written by “Arab” journalists who assess our situation with their “find the homo” glasses.
On the 28th of august, I received an email which linked me to an article posted in the Guardian, written by Diamond Walid and titled “Gay, straight, or just Lebanese?”
To cut things short, [...]

Dear Joumana,
I see you are preparing for the launch of your new book “I Killed Scheherazade: Confessions of an Angry Arab Woman” by Saqi this September. Congratulations.
I am writing you this letter because I read through your interview in the Guardian last week and big keywords popped out of the page: Hezbollah, Lebanon, seaside, Scheherazade, [...]

On Friday, August 20, 2010, an overjoyed crowd of feminists gathered at Nasawiya’s new space in Beirut to celebrate its much-anticipated inauguration.
During the evening, while many raised their glasses to bridge past initiatives with those to come, others played baby-foot, or indulged in tarot reading sessions. Nevertheless, the highlight of the evening was SoliRose’s intense and [...]

For the past year, a team of researchers have been looking at the relationship between the internet and the queer rights movement in Lebanon. The team included queer and feminist activists, techies, and policy specialists. At both personal and political levels, the Internet has aided, allowed, scared, connected, and protected LGBTs in Lebanon and their [...]

It’s 1984. I’m four years old. My hair is boy-short. I’m standing confidently with my elbows bent and my hands at my waist, feet apart. It’s summer and I’m at the beach. I’m wearing a bikini bottom and no top. I look tough, like I’m too cool to be smiling.
Maybe that’s a projection.
I love this [...]

As the old-time tramway left Ataturk Airport to meander in unfamiliar streets, and as I watched the city slowly unravel its sounds and colors to my reluctant eye, I wasn’t able to foresee the most intense twelve days I was about to live; I wasn’t able to tell I was on the very edge [...]

Despite great progress in the neurosciences, our understanding of the determinants of sexual orientation remains incomplete. The nature versus nurture debate is indeed too simplistic as an approach. Genetics and heredity do seem to play a role, but the environment also induces palpable physical alterations in the brain known as plastic changes (evident for example [...]

Bigender, genderqueer, transgender! No matter how you try to define me, I do not care, because at the end of the day I define myself inside my head and express my identity not only through my physical appearance but also through all the dynamics and relationships that I shape, take part in and such.
